Their skates must have been a present from the king direct. this is said of Hans and Gretel by Carl, a rich boy who sees the two go unto the ice with their wooden skates. Here we see how Hans and his family fares compared to the rest of the townspeople: they are one of the poorest families. Their father, Raff Brinker, became invalid after an accident. One day Hans and Gretel learn of a race in which silver skates are to be the prize. Meanwhile, Hans by chance sees Dr. Boekman, a famous old doctor, and convinces the doctor to treat his father. Hans and Gretel eventually obtain steel skates needed to join in the contest, and Gretel wins the silver skates. The doctor manages to treat Raff successfully, and Raff remembers where he hid some â€Å"treasure†, and all goes well in the end. One constant problem is the conflict between Han personal wants and his sense of responsibility and morality. For example, when he finds the purse that contained some money, he must decide whether to keep it or return it; when Hans wants to spend the money on steel skates, while knowing that his family could really use the money; and the dilemma on how he should react to those who humiliate him because of his poverty. The book contains a lot of textbook descriptions, which I think does not work in the its favor, as it is unlikely that a reader will pick a book with the intention of simultaneously reading a good story and â€Å"textbook† material on a countrys history and geography. With all the fiction encountered by modern people today—on television, books, movies—the story of Hans Brinker comes off as somewhat hackneyed, but of course this was probably not the case in the 1860s, when the author wrote the book. I would not say that I actual learned anything from the book. At best, it reminds the reader of the continued existence of the extremely poor even in these modern times. And of course the the book reminds us of the importance of the usual â€Å"goodness of the heart† of of â€Å"advantages† in life that are only superficial and ultimately meaningless.

The Mexican culture is a very traditional, family oriented, religious and also nationalist organisation in corporate identity. This is to the extent of, the only way of knowing the person is by knowing the family and without knowing the person they wont do business with the person. The Mexicans given more importance to the time they spend with their family and do not reduce that time at any cost. The close family concept includes the parents, children, grandparents, uncles, aunties and cousins and the weekend recreation includes relatives and friends also in the above said. This kind of extended family gives them a sense of stability. The culture is more of traditional gender egalitarianism with the father as the authority and the decision-maker. The Mexican males believe nothing must be done in such a way that it would tarnish their image as a man. The role of Mexican women has been homemaking and family, regardless of their great position in workplace. Education, title and family background provide social status, as they value title and position as important as money. In organisational structures Mexicans accept a large power distances and emphasize hierarchical relationships. In Mexican culture they are used to work like, company and society as a unit. They avoid uncertainty and respect their authorities, expect them to guide and take decisions. But still personal relationships must be nurtured and maintained carefully to get commitment from the working Mexicans. The personal respect and recognition motivate Mexicans. The Mexican cultural employees are very diplomatic, very courteous and have fixed loyalty towards the organisation they work. The Mexican culture is not task oriented. They are more punctual and optimistic in calculating time. They are warm and gracious and give respect to their sense of time and traditions. It is also imp ortant to give more stress on friendship in Mexican culture. There are staffing practices such as internal recruitment, personal references, succession planning, psychometric tests, and elaborate bio-data associated with these cultural dimensions, e-recruitment and panel interviews are not predominant in Mexican culture. After the basics in the Mexican culture and outline knowledge of how it works in the organisation, now we are going to see on the hurdles that it causes in the implementing an environment with learning strategy focussed on employee involvement and empowerment. Their organisation is more focussed on collectivism than on individualism which is again a hurdle for learning. They also take contracts inside the organisation for renegotiation than taking them as binding with and working on them by learning more new concepts. Moreover to all these Mexican organisational structures are more male dominant making the views of one gender of the society less or non expressive. This also contributes to the hurdles. All these factors make the Mexican culture as a less ideal environment in which to implement a learning strategy focussed on employee involvement and empowerment. EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION TO ENGAGE IN LEARNING: Equipos is a plastics producing company in an industrial city in the Gulf of Mexico. This plant is a technology-driven plant with employee strength of 170. In 1995 the company was bought by the American partner which was initially a joint venture with a Mexican partner. Initially there were Mexican managers heading the plant and the organisation was in the Mexican was of organisational culture. Then the employee empowerment began resulting in implementing self-managed teams. The teams divided functional roles within the team and the role of team leader changed every three months. The plant was down to three managers others becoming the team facilitators and served as team leaders in the absence of team leaders. Then the interviews were conducted asking the managers, facilitators how to reduce the cultural difference and the barriers in implementing learning. The interviewed Mexican managers, facilitators and employees who attended the meeting were asked for the direct feedback reduci ng the communication gap and also making them responsible towards the company. The teams also gave issues inside the plant with the problems they have and the management also believed in the employees and consequently trust built between the employees and the managers. By the way of having both horizontal and vertical way of communication and facilitating the reduction of hierarchical and moving towards flat organisational structure. There are lots of factors that surfaced in the process of doing the interviews and few of the important factors are going to be discussed. Environmental factors are being one of the most important factors in this case. The work stability over the region, the plant had an advantage of permanent work-force due to the family atmosphere in their region while others have high turnover rate due to constant mobility. Education was another factor as there was a low level of education as the average level of education for the manufacturing sector in Mexico is 5 to 6 years. They hired younger age employees who are more open to change and wanted to learn new things. Finally they also came up with powerful unions and Equipos chose to work with unions providing high wages and cooperative relationships, these unions dint have any objection to the use of teams and increased participation. The primary organisational factor they found was the joint venture between an U.S and a Mexican partner. The joint venture gave a Mexican top management team to afford a thorough understanding of the Mexican culture and aide in the implementing if these programs. The other factor is, the top management gave a management philosophy that geared towards the empowerment and learning. This was first initiated by the Mexican top management by approaching the U.S partner for management aide. One of the important factors in this case is the size of the plant with strength of 170 facilitating the implementation such programs. Equipos had basically three sets of H.R practices that facilitated the learning. First set of practices were the standard H.R practices that equipos implemented were self-managed team works, setting up clear goals, open communication, ongoing training, reward system, managers were given new roles. To attract and retain the skilled labour they gave the highest pay in the area. The second set of practices to say on a whole were on setting culture specific H.R practices such as retaining the Mexican managers and the other advantageous environmental factors that aided their implementation. The third set of practices was the most important one as it dealt with the translation of U.S MNCs practices to fit in with the Mexican. These three sets of practices contributed to the human resources practices of equipos. INTEGERATED MODEL: This integrated model of the relationship between organisational, environmental and HR practices on employee behaviour show the important environmental and organisational factors that influence the choice of HR practices to be implemented in these kind of culture adopting processes. These variables are similar to the exogenous and endogenous variables given by the Schuler, Budwar, and Florkowski but still the model is based on a case described in the articles by Negandhi and Prasad-1971, schuler-2002. This model highlights the critical importance of the HR practices that support the theories of IHRM that propose the HR practices that can be used to align the MNE goals and objectives with the host-country affiliate dynamics. This also shos the importance of HRM in the task of implementing practices that strategically deal with the challenges provide by the foreign environment. The model first the organisational factors that are to be taken into consideration, they are method of foundi ng joint venture play an important role in the understanding and getting adopted to the foreign environment. The management philosophy and management attitude towards the culture also plays key role in adopting or implementing new culture into an existing one. In addition to all these the ability to deal with the culture size is also given high priority. The environmental factors like national values, regional values, education also play a vital role. Now keeping these organisational and environmental factors as variables important HR practices have been selected, first are the standard practices and then the culture-specific practices as the influence the people and can well understand the locals than anybody else. For this they retained the local managers and given them all the freedom to develop a trust between the employees and management. The final and the most important one is the translation of U.S MNC practices into such practices that can suite into the Mexican environment as the practices implemented as like the same will not be accepted in any foreign environment. All the factors, human resource practices all integrated together give a model that was very helpful in implementing organisational learning. CONCLUSION: From the case study we saw how a foreign organisational culture can be implemented into an existing culture. This is to the extent that the management culture which is not congruent to the countrys culture can be also implemented with the help of HR practices. Even though both the organisational and environmental factor are taken as variables for the deciding of HR practices, the environmental factors have influence on the organisational factors or it can also be said it is highly influenced by the environmental factors. This is also shown in the model as the flow from the environmental factors goes to all the boxes in the model, to HR practices, to organisational factors and also to the organisational employee behaviour and culture. The high light of this study is importance of joint venture in the cross-culture management. But when ever implementing cross-cultures the size and the age of the plant must be taken into account as an important caution factor. Thus we studied about the Equipos case study and how it motivated its employees in becoming engaged to an unfamiliar strategy. Also thus we studied about the different cultures and how to manage changes in cross-culture making us easy to implement any strategies in a management in any culture.

Does Dickens create a rrealistic figure in the character of Scrooge? A Christmas Carol When people read or watch a ghost story, they have certain expectations of it. People would usually expect the story to be scary, have an eerie feel, and have appropriate, creepy settings such as a graveyard or derelict house. Most ghost stories use darkness to create the right atmosphere. There is usually a wide range of characters such as a hero/heroin, a damsel in distress or someone in danger, a victim, horrible and creepy characters that maybe outcasts and most obviously a ghost. People expect the story to have a scary opening, that draws them in into the story making them want to read on, but that doesn't give anything away. The opening often gives some background information on the characters. There is quite often a murder or disappearance to be investigated. Most ghost stories have a closed ending where the mystery is solved or the ghost is disposed of. Fear, suspense and foreshadowing are important features in the plot of a ghost story. All of these factors usually crop up in a typical ghost story. Older ghost stories tend to be text based where as newer ones can be found in other media, such as films. Many films and television series of ghost stories have been produced. The more recent ones tend to drift away from the criteria of a typical ghost story by combining with other genres; where as the older stories seem to follow the expected features of a ghost story much more closely. The more modern ghost story films have mixed with the horror genre because it adds to the atmosphere of the story and makes it scarier. Ghost story films and TV programmers usually drift away from the typical ghost story line because they don't stick just to the ghost story genre; they tend to mix in other genre such as romance, murder mystery and especially horror! This is because the aspect of horror in the ghost story creates a scarier atmosphere that keeps the viewer interested. Films and TV mix other genres such as romance and mystery to keep the viewer interested and to make the storyline different, unique, so it's not similar to other films and programmers. It also enables the ghost story to have a twist in the storyline making it much less predictable there for drawing the viewer into the story and making them want to keep watching. What once was seen as the eroding force of class divisions has sadly become the reason for its fortification. This eroding force does however give a pleasant image of a better life with a higher earning career at hand.The instability of the nation’s economy has made it difficult for students of low-income class to get access to colleges and universities and surpass the invisible barriers that hold them back from achieving the American dream every citizen has. One major drawback for access to higher education can be focused directly on the nation. Since the tragic incident of 9/11, our nation’s spending towards defense has dramatically increased. What does that mean? Not enough dollars are going towards what m atters most: education.The Bush’s administration’s 2007 budget proposed the largest cut to federal education funding since the twenty-six years of existence for the Education Department—a loss of $2. 1 billion. This cut meant that schools and colleges throughout the nation had to compete more than ever for proper funding from the government, both at the state and federal level. As resources are being stripped from schools, struggling students will only continue to struggle, while students with money and resources continue to add on to the legacy that has preceded them.This information does not include another economic sector that has made it difficult for students to access higher education, the ever-growing cost of college tuition. â€Å"College tuition has increased 66% beyond inflation within the last ten years, and 26% at private institutions†. Higher education was looked at to further the knowledge of our nation’s citizens, to expand and bette r what we had, but due to the difficulty of accessing it, all we continue to do is increase the gap of class stratification.Gary Rhoades of the Center of the Future of Higher Education stated, â€Å"Our current policy path, of continued cuts in state support and continued increases in tuition will only increase the stratification in the future†. This is an adverse trend, as our nation is in dire demand for more educated graduates and workers, not fewer. Yet, policymakers continue to steer their focus away from increasing access to schools, and making it that much harder for students who struggle already. In the world we live in today, money is the motive and the drive.Elementary and post secondary schools with a high property tax are two linked reasons for the inequality of education. Schools rely heavenly on property tax revenue using as much as half for funding. A report done by Daphne A. Kenyon, a member at the Lincoln Institute, displayed the correlation of property tax a nd school funding of seven states: California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, and Michigan, with â€Å"Massachusetts ranks the highest and California the lowest, according to the respective property tax relief and school funding principles presented in the reports. This report associates itself with the most educated states in the country, with Massachusetts being one of the most educated and California being one the lowest. Giving you an idea how this source of revenue actually helps the students in the long run, getting a higher quality of education, as schools are able to buy more materials for the classrooms, and pay for workshops which could improve teachers. Educational value depends on the educational spending in students and institutions, as does the quality.This inequality for students enforces class stratification, as students who receive better quality of teaching throughout their academic career, will be better prepared for colleges and universit ies and the workforce ahead. As these students leave a form of legacy behind them in their alma mater, access for their children will be easier, as children with parents who’ve attended college are more likely to go than those with parents who have not. Unfortunately for those who receive poor quality education, their mobility will be limited than what it should be, ignoring general income as a factor.Students with lower income have always trailed behind their affluent colleagues in school performance, not saying that they cannot advance, but the way the system is being operated against them. Universities have grown selective in their admission process, aiming towards students with higher incomes, as they contribute and pay more than those with lower income. A trend that has continued to grow and debated about is the acceptance of out-of-states students over in-states students.Populated states with tight higher education budgets have grown to rely on out-of-state students due to their higher tuition payments to help sustain the schools. Another issue that universities and institutions present is the administration blight. A 2010 study has shown that administrators have grown 39% per 100 students compared to professors, researchers, and other staff members, who have only grown 18% per 100 students. Schools need more professors and researchers, not administrators, who make an average of $390,000 a year.This steers universities’ mission away from providing a proper education and more and giving those in higher power more power. Full time professors and researchers are being replaced, and do not have time to perform research to further the advancement of knowledge. Despite the numbers flown around everywhere, what you earn from a college degree is in fact beneficial to a person. Those with a post secondary education will genuinely earn a bout 64% more than someone with just a high school degree or a drop out ($1053 vs. 638 earned a month). The earnin g gap in today’s society has been the highest since 1915, and in today’s economy, you need to have that stable income to be ready for whatever policies and laws and raises in tax rates that the country might throw at you. So attending college will definitely have it’s advantage, most of the times. Although attaining and completing your post secondary education, the work field will not always guarantee you a job solely due to a degree.Post secondary education has taken it share of hits from legislators and policymakers, but this should not affect the access for students who are working hard to achieve a better future for themselves and potential families to come. Despite, the intense competition that has grown, post secondary is essential in the today’s world and a little competition is always healthy. The insistence seems impossible to resist, like a constant drum beat inside the soldiers minds making the soldiers feel like they have no alternative but to go to war. Dulce et Decorum est has an accusatory tone; this tone is directed mockingly at my friend, particularly in the last stanza. The poets anger builds and the use of the direct and accusatory tone excels. The poet gives his description impact by speaking in the present tense guttering, choking, drowning, this gives a sense of immediacy and desperate warning to the soldiers to believe the happy stories of war. The language in Whos for the game? is crude as the poet has never before experienced war: she creates a false image to young, nai ve boys of what war might be like. The poet has a target audience of young men similar to Wilfred Owens poem though he tries to put across to true image of war. Wilfred Owen uses powerful imagery to describe the horror of the war, guttering, giving images of a candle about to flicker out. He uses the image of a devil like a devils sick of sin; the soldiers are sick of sin but ironically devils should never be sick of sin. Similes used near the beginning of the poem such as bent double like old beggars under sacks suggest that the soldiers are now on the fringes of society. In theory the soldiers should be young and brave, but Owen reduces them to old, forgotten about hags. In Whos for the game? Pope uses an enthralling rugby game to describe the war, to her readers. This quite contradicts Owens views that war has made the soldiers old like hags. The two poems have quite different messages. Whos for the game? has a clear propaganda message as it tricks young, nai ve men into thinking war is something its not, whereas Wilfred Owen has a definite anti-war message, conveying the truth to men and soldiers that have been in, or are considering going to war. The town poems are very different in their form. Jesse Pope uses a very regular rhyme and rhythm: a strong beat is felt particularly at the end of each line, emphasising the patronising question words to the soldiers. The last beat falls at the end of the last stanza on you as if the poet is physically pointing their finger at the juvenile solider or reader. This is very personal and direct. In contrast to this simple poem, Wilfred Owens is quite complex. It does have rhyme such as sacks and backs though in between lines 1 and 3, is sludge, slowing the poem right down, these awkward sounding consonants conveying an onomatopoeia effect. In the second stanza lines 1 and 3, and 2 and 4 rhyme, though 5 and 6 dont creating struggle as the poem doesnt flow, again emphasising the struggle and nightmares of the soldiers that are intruding on the present. Both poems had a very strong and powerful though different impact on the reader. In Whos for the game? we feel angry and frustrated at Jesse Pope for giving the soldiers a false illusion of what war was. Being young and nai ve the young men still look for guidance and this sort of poetry we feel is unethical. In comparison, Dulce et De Corum Est makes us feel encouraged that someone was fighting for the truth to be told. The fact that the soldiers were only young and nai ve was clearly recognised and emphasised: children ardent for some desperate glory Wilfred Owen had the true picture of how wrong Jesse Pope was to spread poems full of lies. However, the reader does finish the poem feeling proud that young soldiers were prepared to fight for our country until they were no longer able. Disabled by Wilfred Owen is an anti-war poem, describing in much detail the story of a naive, young man going into war to impress, unaware of the full detail of what he was signing up to, in fact throwing away his life. Does it matter by Siegfried Sassoon, similarly, this is an anti-war poem putting across his views in a very patronising manor making his strong anger against war very clear. Where the poem Disabled is a sad, detailed story, Does it matter? is an angry, but simple poem, filled with sarcasm. Where disabled subtlety portrays the anti-war feeling of the poet, Does is matter? is again anti-war, but filled with the poets anger and fury. Disabled uses heavy, detailed description to gain the audiences attention, though Does it matter? uses simple language in good writing techniques such as the use of clichi s and sarcasm in order to entertain and again get the audience listening. Both poets have a clear anti-war message, and both seem strongly against Jesse Pope, who wrongly, wrote poems about a war which she had never experienced poets such as Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, along with many others, aimed to convince the public that wars were far from sweet and decorous. The mood of Disabled reaches for the sadness and pity of the audience by going into great depth about a young soldier, where Does it matter wastes no time in unmistakably putting across his outrage of trying to trick young, nai ve soldiers to the reader. The poem Disabled changes the tense of the poem frequently, alternating from present to past to future, giving the reader full knowledge of the exciting history, sad situation the young man is in, and what destroyed future the man has ahead of him. He is described presently as legless, sewn short at elbow as if he is now not a whole human, not a real man. Ironically, he was legless when signing up for the war: when hed drunk a peg, He thought hed better join, and on completing the job, he is now permanently disabled, and has lost the admiration he once had for signing up to go to war, before he threw away his knees it ironically seems he intended to through them away, though now he is lonely and in self-pity as he has no legs and foreshortened arms. The young man feels destroyed by the loss of his limbs, the young man that were whole ironically, he feels emasculated due to him loosing his limbs. He will no longer never feel again how slim girls waists are, or how warm their subtle hands; it seems he was extremely nai ve into what he was actually signing up to, which was in fact throwing away his youth and even life. Its almost a lifetime ago, as war has matured him so much, from the quote and that he had a girlfriend his Meg it would seem he was popular with the ladies. This would probably be due to his extremely good looks, there was an artist silly for his face it would now be such a contrast, as all the colour and excitement has drained out of his life, shivered in his ghastly suit of grey, his life has gone from colour quickly to black and white. It would seem ironic, that he signed up to war to impress the girls, though now he is touched like some queer disease by girls, he wanted to impress though he is now only being repulsed at and some are even quite afraid of him. On going to receive admiration, pity they may dole he receives none, only little pity. The young man was tricked into war by people such as Jesse Pope, and it can be easily understood from this why poets such as Siegfried Sassoon wrote with such power, and anger not holding back as they wanted the soldiers to know the real truth. Does it matter? loosing your legs? it seems for the young man in Disabled it did considerably, ruined his life in fact. For people will always be kind Sassoon writes, we have learnt that this is definitely not always the case, as the man from war was felt he was touched like some queer disease even though the simple reason he was in that state was due to him fighting for their country, putting his life on the line. He is described presently as waiting for dark as if there is nothing to do but simply wait for death, drowned in his own sadness and blood, a leap of purple spurted from his thigh when to impress was what he signed up for, what he received is so mething unimaginably different. The insensitiveness and greed of the people left at home is more clearly shown in Does it matter: need not show that you mind others come in after hunting, to gobble their muffins and eggs there is a sense of ignorance and lack of sympathy to the injured coming back from war. When ironically, if the soldiers hadnt of gone, the whole country may have been at risk, and the ones left at home would be unable to go hunting and gobble their muffins and eggs. The poem Disabled ends with repetition on the end of the last two lines, Why dont they come? Why dont they come? Calling out and emphasising to the reader the desperate situation the soldiers have landed themselves into. There is no longer anyone there for him, no one to look at him. This once more, all agrees with Siegfried Sassoons poem Does it matter and people wont say that your mad his strong sarcasm has backed up evidence after reading the story of Disabled. Sassoon writes mockingly at what comfort may be given theres such splendid work for the blind this is platitude, trying to make someone feel better, when really it is simply an empty comfort as how could that make up for losing your sight. Does it matter? also disdains the poem Dulce et Decorum est: Do they matter? those dreams from the pit? for the soldiers being described in this poem their sleep is far from dreams, its nightmares, phantasmagorical, re-living the times of the pit, as they are intruding on the soldiers present lives: before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning having a horrific impact on the soldiers lives. Both poems have a clear anti-war message, though where Sassoons has writes in a youthful idealistic way about war, Owen writes in a very satirical manor though has a serious moral purpose underneath with many other feelings and emotions attached such as bitterness and anger, disillusioning the reader. Where, the young man in disabled is a clear victim of Jesse Popes propaganda Told it was like a game, similar to her poem Whos for the game the young man thought it would be like football, and the injuries were good, a blood smear down his leg carried shoulder-high, it was after football though war is no comparison to a game of football or even rugby as it was likened to by Jesse Pope the young man was robbed of his disillusions. The poem Disabled has regular rhyming; each stanza has a different pace creating different moods for the reader. For example stanza 4 has is quick paced showing the excitement in the young mans life before he went to war: someone said hed look a God in kilts, thats why; he may be, too, to please his Meg; his life was so exhilarating and fast. This then contrasts to the present and future tense stanzas which are slow and dont flow easily for the reader, particularly the last stanza which has no rhyming, this is difficult for the reader to read similar to what a difficult life the young man now leads. Similarly the poem does it matter has a very regular rhyming pattern, lines 1 and 5, 2 and 3 rhyme, the forth line always not. This creates what could seem a very simple poem for the reader to read, though it has a very complex meaning inside quite different to disabled, where most of the poets opinions are detailed, and on the surface. Adding to this, the consistent repetition of Does it matter? at the beginning of each stanza brings obvious sarcasm, and the true effects of war on the soldiers. From reading and analysing these poems I have become open minded about my view of the different poets forms of writing. At first I was extremely against the crude way of writing that Jesse Pope did, though I now release that if the truth had been revealed all along, there is a possibility no one would of wanted to fight and our country would have been quite different from what it is today. I thought the propaganda poetry, especially Wilfred Owens Disabled was particularly emotional as the situation can still be related to today.
